About The Metropolitan Arts Council
The Metropolitan Arts Council (MAC), founded in 1973, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts service and development organization dedicated to the preservation and growth of the cultural arts in Greenville County, South Carolina. MAC advances the cultural and economic vitality of the upstate by providing funding, technical assistance and professional services that enable a strong, well-supported community of artists and cultural organizations. MACs programs and services help artists and arts providers focus on creating, producing, exhibiting, and presenting the arts. As Greenvilles primary steward of public and private arts funding, MAC disburses financial support from the SC Arts Commission, the City of Greenville, the U.S. Department of Education and area corporations to deserving artists, schools and community organizations. Since 2000, MAC regrants have exceeded a total of $500,000 to support arts initiatives and projects to the following:
- artists to encourage them to work, grow and flourish in our region;
- cultural organizations to assess needs and coordinate the delivery of arts services across the region;
- arts providers and tourism groups to stimulate arts-related spending and position the region as a cultural destination;
- young people by helping educators and administrators fund programs that integrate arts into everyday learning.
- MAC doesnt make art; MAC helps make art possible. MAC has the unique role of the entrepreneurial partner within the arts community. In that capacity, MAC is able to respond to community needs by developing initiatives that advocate for a healthier arts environment for the professional artist, the emerging artist and the artist within us all. In its 32-year history, MAC has been responsible for the creation and development of many projects in the area, including The Peace Center for the Performing Arts, Upstate Visual Arts, and most recently, Artisphere, the regions international arts festival. The Metropolitan Arts Council enjoys a membership exceeding 450 artists and 90 arts groups. These constituents rely on MAC for professional technical assistance in marketing, fundraising, and program development; some rely on MAC for direct funding, and others support MAC for its role as the community advocate for all the arts.
