MUSIC: Venues, Songwriters, Bands

This is a new section of this website, still in the developing stages. Hope you'll revisit regularly to catch up on progress.

A mountain of material is out there about musicians and bands, from what's happenin' now to as far back as discovery will lead us, we'll attempt to post here a selection of facts, fiction and undetermined rumor. This will be a compilation of what we suggest is among Greenville's most dedicated and celebrated music and its makers.

Event date: FEB 9, '08
Walter Hyatt
TWO tributes / same day
.
Uncle Walt's Band fans will want to know about this. Everybody should attend who wants to know about the cultural richness our upstate region. Hyatt's widow, Heidi, the Walter Hyatt estate and a host of musical friends have worked to lovingly sort thru over 40 songs of nearly finished things he was working on thru 1996 when he died tragically in the ValuJet plane crash in Florida. Some of these first 12 tracks are revisits like a sterling new version of his (in my opinion) greatest song "Deeper Than Love" replete with a heavenly Jerry Douglas Dobro solo. There are goodies included here like the never previously released delightful concert favorite "Sheik Of ShBoom".

Horizon is proud to be one of just a very few retailers that for now will offer the CD. Walter's legacy and this CD will be celebrated at The Showroom at Hub-Bub in Spartanburg Saturday Feb. 9 at 8pm. Uncle Walt's Band member and amazing Country star himself David Ball along with some of The Belleville Outfit and others will perform the songs of Walter Hyatt. www.hub-bub.com/music.

Earlier that same day some of the same performers including David Ball, Rob Teter and Marshall Hood of Belleville will do a brief set at Horizon in The Bohemian Café as an in-store concert and taping for the Tower Of Song show on WNCW www.wncw.org. That will be Saturday Feb 9th at 3pm. Call (864) 235-7922 for info.

StoneFest Music Festival runs annually in October . Technically it's two words: Stone Fest. Either way you call at it, this Greenville music event is not to be missed. The festival grows in size every year on the NorthEnd of Main Street. What you get is an eclectic array of music, which means "including but not limited to jazz, blues, world music, classical, folk & bluegrass, indie rock and experimental & electronic. Think of a music festival start-up in the realm of a small Spoleto that goes to and through Austin / Chicago / Memphis / NYC and Merle Fest, and lands in our North Main neighborhood." See stonefest.net for details.

Who Was This Mystery Drummer?

At first glance this dude with the snare drum looks like he could be an early rocker. That's almost George Harrison's haircut from Mersey Beat days. Well, think again, the chap is a Greenville musician and his identity is likely long lost to us. This pic is cropped from a large photo of the "Berean Class Band of Brandon Mill Baptist Church," dated 1935. It's an amazing old photo and it's just further evidence that there's a lot of music out there and it goes way, way back. You can get a better look at the whole photograph by clicking here.
