Compliments on your fine website. It’s been a while since I returned to the Netherlands after a stay of 6 months in your beautiful city. I arrived in Greenville in December 1997 and left again in May 1998. I went to school at the Euroflight flight academy. Some of my friends are still there. I must say that I enjoyed my stay very much and so it’s nice to see some pictures of Greenville again. I will bookmark your site and hope you will show a lot more pix of the city and of course the downtown airport. Nice site, well done!!! ---Regards, Michel S., Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Can you tell us what is in the permanent collection other than the Andrew Wyche artwork and what special showings will be at the Greenville Art Center in late July, early August? Thank You.

A couple of questions, if you have time: Is there a specialty grocery store that sells decent wine, fresh seafood, and stuff like that (you know, things with artichoke and capers?) 2. Are there Christian houses of worship that encourage the full spiritual pilgrimage? 3. Are there places to live outside of town where a person could have a house on a few acres and not live in an executive home neighborhood?

Nice web site. I’m moving to Greenville and enjoyed seeing the human side of things through your site.

My family and I currently live in Bejing and we are looking into relocating to Greenville. Does Greenville have much in the way of Chinese (i.e. Mandarin speakers) living there? We would like to keep up our Mandarin and maintain contact with the Chinese. In your opinion, what are some of the better suburban schools (elementary, middle, and high school) and areas to live in the Greenville-Spartanburg area? Thanks for the informative website.

I just read your piece about Nancy Hanks and John C. Calhoun. I have a few questions about her siblings. You note that in his will, Luke Hanks mentions Thomas, Luke Hanks Jr., John, George, Robert, Martha, Elizabeth, Sudie, Judith, Scilla and Lucretia. Have you ever come across a William Hanks? In my Family history it is noted that a William Hanks was the brother of Nancy Hanks and that Nancy Hanks was the mother of Abraham Lincoln. There is also a notation in my family history that Lincoln, on several occasions, attended Hanks' family reunions.
William Hanks is my Great(x4) Grandfather. Confirming his relation to Nancy Hanks would open the door to more of my personal family history. I realize that this has nothing to do with John C. Calhoun, Nancy Hanks or Abraham Lincoln but it would help me considerably in searching for my ancestors.

Are there any photos of various people who were not civic leaders but just personalities who trigger memories of downtown visits?
Examples: The gentlemen who stood by the front of Rey's Jewelers and sold The Greenville Piedmont news paper.
The
elevator operator at the Greenville records building.
The man who cleaned coins at the Poinsett Hotel.
The gentlemen who carried out groceries at the "Cash and Carry" Grocery Store for so many years. He finally saved enough money to buy himself a new bright
red Corvette.
Mr. Allen of Allen Music Company who brightened many young boys lives with guitar lessons in the upstairs class room.
The
blind man who played guitar at the Monaghan Mill Company Store for the gain of pocket change.
I'm sure there are many more but these are a few.
All the faces (can't remember their names) you could always count on when you enter the Falls Street Cafe.
These are just a few of the people who never did "great" things but should be counted as the "mortar" that held Greenville together.

Here's a little story which I know to be true because it happened to me. It cast a spot light on things that hold their value. It's been several years back (1993) I received a call from my brothers wife in St. Louis, Mo. telling me that my brother collapsed at work and was taken to the hospital. He was promptly diagnosed with a fast growing brain tumor. In our haste to get there I paused to ask if there was anything he needed or wished for. Now he had been away from Greenville since the late 40's (military) only to return for short visits. He asked for two (2) hot dogs, all the way from Pete's. I called Pete's and told them of my mission asked if they could help me package the order for travel. Affirmative was their reply. While he never got to eat those two hot dogs I learned how amazing the memory of a "good hot dog" could be and the value of the simple everyday things of life when it really matters.

Hello from Australia
I used to live in the carriage house of the
Gassaway Mansion back in 1954. My parents and I lived there after I came home from the St Francis Hospital. It was called the Issaqueena Apartment then.
My father was attending Furman University and also worked as a photographer for the newspaper, his name was Maurice E. Holley,Jr.
I have photographs of the mansion from that time and I do believe if memory serves me, an aerial photo or it might have been taken from a tall building. My sister and I drove by it this past month while I was on holiday from Perth Australia. I am moving back to the Greenville area as soon as I sell our home here in Western Australia where I have lived for 4 yrs. I have many of my fathers photo albums that have newspaper clippings and photos of Greenville during the 1950's. Maybe you might be interested in looking at them. I would be happy to meet with you once I return to the states. You can contact me here at this email address.

I am an out of towner from Atlanta who is seeing a woman who lives in Greer. We have enjoyed checking out Greenville"s historical sites and found the Chick Springs "bath house" but cannot find the property that the hotel itself occupied. I understand it probably has other buildings on the site but am more than mildly curious about where it literally stood. Can you help me here?

Lynyrd Skynyrd played their last show in Greenville, SC in Oct 1977 before crashing in a swamp in Mississippi. They stayed at the Sheraton on Church Street before leaving. I think there should be a 30th year tribute to them and possibly have Lynyrd Skynyrd place a tribute concert. Maybe they could then leave on a plane from Greenville Downtown, like they did 30 years ago, and fly to Baton Rouge for the show that never got played! ---Rusty

Dear Greenvillesouth: Thank you so very much for publishing your fine history of John C. Calhoun, Abraham Lincoln, Nancy Hanks Mystery. I have been looking for many years to find something in print to help substantiate what my ancestors told me many years ago. I believe that I am cousin to Abraham Lincoln, as I am descended from Mary Elizabeth Hanks (Weldon) Pearman, sister of Nancy Hanks and daughter of Luke Hanks and Ann Harris Hanks. My mother's family was from Virginia and they came to the upper part of South Carolina in the late 1700's and early 1800's. I grew up hearing many family tales of life in the early days. The Pearman family, into which Mary Elizabeth Hanks (Weldon) married, was, and still is respected, with many of their progeny becoming outstanding citizens. The late Silas Pearman was head of the South Carolina Highway Department for many years, and there are also many others who came to prominence. The only other printed reference to the Hanks Lincoln Calhoun mystery that I have seen is in the Biographical Volume IV of D.D. Wallace's History of South Carolina, where the writer mentions that a certain family lived close to Craytonville, South Carolina, and near the inn "where Nancy Hanks worked and John C. Calhoun was a frequent visitor." Incidentally, I am named for John C. Calhoun's daughter, Anna Maria Calhoun. Other branches of my family were socially associated with the Calhouns. Thank you for your help in keeping the facts of this mystery available to the public. Sincerely, Anna

Hello, I have been trying to find out about the museum on the internet and I am not having any good luck. I would like to know about the hours and days and location of the museum. I found out through the Ty Cobb news and it only said Shoeless Joe Jackson Museum opens in Greenville July 2. I would like the website and do they have gift shop?

I am doing a research project and I was wondering if you know of an organization or a link where I might be able to find statistics on dog ownership in Greenville?

You ought to post the ABE story on the Wikipedia. History needs to been seen.

My son is a student at League Academy and they are doing a research project about Greenville. Do you happen to have any written information regarding Camp Sevier or can you put me in the right direction to find out some information?

You may want to update your information regarding the Northgate Soda Shop. Jimmy DeYoung retired and the Soda Shop is now owned by Catherine Christophillis, a local attorney. She is preserving the originality, but has made a few additions (grilled chicken, greek salad, home made cakes, cookies and baklava) and the Soda Shop is now open 9:00 AM until 8:00 PM (Monday through Saturday), and The Other Side is open 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM (Monday through Saturday). If you have any questions, I'm Catherine's paralegal and manager of the Soda Shop and The Other Side. You can reach me at the Shop

My family and I are hoping to move to your area within the next year. I would like to know where I could find some of my relatives who have remained there, as it is important to me to have my children around family members, and learn about their heritage, so that they may be a part of its preservation. My Grandmother was born at Russell House outside of Walhalla, as was her mother. I have derived from family records that an ancestor, Robert Nicholson settled in that area over 300 years ago. Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

- - -

I'm writing because I was wondering if you had more information on the Chick Springs Gazebo and Springhouse. I have reserved a book at the library and I was just wondering if you had a little more information. The reason I am asking is because we live right next door to the remains and I have become more and more curious everytime my husband and I walk by them. I have tried to find information on line but I must admite I stick and online searches. I dont know if you can give more information out about it but I would love to learn more of this place and what used to be there before.

My name is Larry. I am co-owner of Good Properties Real Estate. I also happened to grow up across the street from Brandon ball park (Now appropriately called Shoeless Joe Jackson Memorial Park). I still own the home there. I recently added a page to our company website dedicated to Joe and the "mill hill". I created a link to your site as part of the article. To access my article: go to www.goodpropertiesllc.com Click on Greenville Stories. If you object to this link I will promptly remove it. Your feedback would be appreciated. I visit your site often and enjoy it very much.

Nancy Hanks was impregnated by Abe Enloe. Aside from the fact that the child was also named Abe, please see some Enloe family photos. A photo of old Abe Enloe still exists. He also was of extraordinary height. The facial resemblance is so striking that there is no doubt he was Lincoln's biological father. Maybe Nancy had an affair with Calhoun, maybe he paid some money (swindled) to get her out of the State. But the photos don't lie - Enloe was the father.

Greetings, Thank you for your site on chick springs. My first experience with the springs was in 1974. My family had just moved from Charlotte in an Apt complex that had a pool. (we were all from Greenville originally) So my sister and I asked our Great-grandfather to take us swimming. Of course he took us to chick springs. I will never forget the diving boards and all the people sitting on the side. If I had of known that this was to be the last of the swimming there I would have paid more attention, but I was just a child. The next time I saw the springs is when we moved to Taylors in 1984. I would take my girlfriends there on the back road by the springhouse and make out. It wasn't until 90 that I realized it was the same place. I even took the woman who is my wife there a few times. Anyway in early 2001 I decided to write a story about a family from Charleston that came to vacation at chick springs in the summer of 1860. I did a lot of research to make sure everything was accurate and I even included some Greenville history. Like Salesday and the Mansion house hotel. It turned into a love story and I have never written anything like that before. If I had a question about something I would call Judith Bainbridge and she would help me out, and she didn't even know who I was. Anyway everybody that has read it really loved it. And for me it was a way to teach some of my friends Greenville history without them knowing it, they were too interested in the storyline to pay attention. I sent a copy to Miss Bainbridge before I tried to get it published but heard no reply. Every publisher I have talked to wants me to pay for it but I cannot afford that. I would love to spark a genuine interest for the springs again and I know my story could do it. It is a little over 300 pages long so it is really a novel. If you or somebody you know would be interested in helping me find a publisher for this book please E-mail me and let me know. It would be great for every chick springs fan, or Greenville historian to read. I would really appreiacte your help in any way.

I find your story very interesting. My father’s mother was a cousin to John C. Calhoun and this same story was told to me as a child and later as a teenager in Pittsview, Alabama about 50 years ago by an aunt and others in the family. The only one currently living that would know is aunt Lilly Loyd in Panama City, Florida. She is currently in her 90s.

My friends and I are planning a spring break trip to South Carolina and are planning to stay in Greenville for three days so we can travel around the Greenville/Spartanburg Area. We already seen that there is all kinds of things to do and are very excited. We're from Iowa and all so this will be a real cultural experience for us, which is something I am looking forward to. My friends and I wanted to have some "real Southern Style food" while we are down there and what if you knew any local places that are worth a stop. Plus if you can think of any places in Greenville not so well known attractions that are worth a look please let me know. I look forward to hearing back from you and hope that you can give us great ideas for our trip. I hope that when I am done with school that I can move down to Greenville or that area because the more I see the more I am falling in love with the town. I hope this trip will only strengthen my interest in your community. Thank you so much!

My family is interested in visiting Reedy River Park during our next family reunion in July 2007. How can I get information on reserving picnic areas as well as other activities at the park?

Hello, I walk my dog frequently at Cleveland Park and have yet to see any waste bags in the containers provided for pick up. I carry my own.
I also live in a beach community where it is mandatory that the dog owners be responsible for picking up after thier dogs and the town provides a plastic bag receptacle for this purpose....and it actually works!
Can you address this situation and have whomever is responsible to load the waste bag container to please do that? thank you for your attention

In reference to your web site report on Ray----The Peanut Man: I’ve got lots of pictures and videos over the years (from 1984 to 1998) of Ray and his family back when they were in the boiled peanut business. I used to stop there on EVERY field trip with my school group from Greenwood and got LOTS of peanuts. In 1998, I stopped there and asked his wife what happened to Roy and she said he ran off with her daughter (obviously a second marriage?!?!?) and that she was running the peanut business now. Then when I returned some time later to buy peanuts, I found out that she had moved somewhere over near North Greenville College (in the same area). Other than that, I don’t know anymore what happened to the family, nor have I been able to find where she might still be selling the boiled peanuts. I sure do miss them (the peanuts!) since they didn’t over salt them and used only hickory wood to smoke them.

I would love to see some pictures of the inside of The Poinsette Hotel . My Grandmother use to take me there as a little girl. I think I might have an old chair that was in the hotel a long time ago. I've had it redone and would just like to know. I would like to see old pictures. Thank you so much.
