LIBERTY BRIDGE

Greenville, SC, Summer 2007 ---

Liberty Bridge is an impressive design by architect Miguel Rosales of Boston, Massachusetts. Reaching 355-feet across Reedy River falls, it's a curved pedestrian suspension bridge with spectacular views of the waterfalls and gardens of Reedy River Historic Park, in downtown Greenville, SC. Secured into the earth at each end, the bridge is suspended by only two columns standing at an angle of 15-degrees

Liberty Bridge (a walkbridge, no motorized traffic) opened to the public in September, 2004 with a large crowd joining Mayor Knox White in the celebration, a big day for the newly renovated Falls Park gardens and greenways along the Reedy in downtown. The photo above, by Joseph Brown, shows a panoramic view of Reedy River falls with the shadow of Liberty Bridge below (more photos next page). This suspension bridge has become quite an attraction for Greenville's tourism.

Brief Park History: In 1932, the Garden Club won the $500 second prize in Better Homes & Gardens "More Beautiful America" contest. The money was used to create one of Greenville's most attractive tourist sights in the 1930s. That first arboretum was neglected during World War II, and fell into decay but it's back in a big way today!
