Artist Statement:
In my work, I want to make visible the intangible presence of loss. As moments pass information is lost -- obscured by the constant, fleeting movement of time. Essentially, I am interested in the gaps in knowledge, or the loss of stability that is inextricably linked to memory.
Alluding to memory in visual form entails the loss of the secure for the instability of the trace. The memory of lived experience remains indelible within us when the tangible presence of an event is lost. My work hangs on by a precarious thread to the physical world, moving from substance to void, threatened by the possibility of disappearance. I shift between observation and destruction, physical presence and absence, in order to question the act of looking and to mimic the instability in perception.
Ultimately, I want to find significance in the practice of everyday life and in the practice of painting. I am committed to working with the medium of paint because I find the material to be at once complex and immediate. I find solace in the tradition of painting and limitless possibility in the elastic nature of the medium.
