Artist Statement: It’s been said that a stained glass piece is a marriage of art and craft. The color and texture of the glass and the design of the panel showcase the artistry; the fitting and assembling of glass and metal illustrate the craftsmanship. We approach our work with this union in mind. As we design and plan a panel we strive to have each line, each piece of glass, each color and texture come together with artistic merit. As we build the panel we know that our technique must be sure and steady to turn the design into an attractive reality.

The glass we select covers a range of colors and textures, and sometimes goes to three dimensions. Colors often reflect what’s found in nature, such as the golds, oranges and reds in our panels of fall leaves, or the blues and greens in our panels of dolphins in the sea. Similarly, we incorporate textures to represent falling rain, ocean waves, ice crystals, or flower petals. We can enhance color and texture by going to three dimensions with faceted jewels, pieces fused (fired) in a kiln, and the bottoms cut from wine or soda bottles.

Our designs feature everyday elements, often in a symmetrical arrangement. There’s a panel of side-by-side maple leaves in colors representing spring, summer and fall. There’s one of dolphins chasing one another through the waves. Wine bottles placed around a bunch of grapes, with corresponding bottle bottoms. Red peppers surrounding the bottom of a well-known Louisiana sauce bottle. Six tulips of varying colors but the same shape, as seen through a window frame. All of them, we believe, artistic and well-crafted.
