Artist Statement:
Although he was born in San Diego Jason Waggoner spent his formative years meandering around the woods and fields of a farm in Mariposa, California, a rural town near Yosemite National Park. In forsaken gold mines he found Crystals: Quartz, pyrite, and amethyst; in barns and outbuildings: old hats, magazines, riding gear.
A pair of white cowboy boots loved by some grandchild withstood the erosion of life the way harder minerals stand up to storm water. As a teen in the San Francisco area he saw old billboards; layer upon layer of yesterdays ads worn through by sun, and wind, and rain. Or he prowled used-bookshops where books, washed out of one life by circumstance, trickled in another by curiosity and care.
Today, Jason takes this geology of love as the springboard for his work. What scraps survive the effects of time and chance? Why do we preserve an outdated atlas? Or, what keeps us from becoming attached to some more useful book? These questions drive him to personal artistic experimentation and documentary observation.
In some way, each piece Jason creates is connected to the geology of love. His work expresses the wonder he found in treasured rocks and rubbish, in geology and history. Large or small, every work, like a specimen box, isolates one sliver of reality.
