Artist Statement:
Having lived in the Greenville/Spartanburg area all my life has made me yearn for the art of other cultures. A lifelong student of art, my education began when my family moved to Sugar tit, now what they call the golden box near BMW and the airport. Located on our property is a creek with a natural clay bank that I used to make toys when I was seven. I always knew art was the only thing I would do, as I always had. I studied photography, painting, sculpture, printmaking, I taught myself to draw, sew, design clothes, and to make pottery. I still use the Sugar tit clay, a beautiful white clay, and I find the shards of the potters on my property who worked the earth of the past. My inspiration comes from the great artists I've studied. The greats I would like to pay homage to are Edward Weston, David Smith, Max Ernst, and the local artists Alice Munn and Patti Brady. I have especially been inspired by the children I have taught for fifteen years. Looking at their work has gave me a simple appreciation of line, composition and definitely color. They can use the brightest colors without a need to muddy it up, and when they mix all the colors to one, I can appreciate the beginning of their journey as artists!
