Artist Statement:
The focus of my work is hand-built sculptural ceramic forms. I create pieces for the pedestal as well as the wall. The combination of these formats allows me to express my 2-D and 3-D interests. These spatial considerations influence surface-to-form relationships and the generation of form; translating drawing into clay objects. In addition to sculptural ceramics, I make hand-built utilitarian work. Recent efforts in this area are focused on stoneware planters. I use a variety of clay bodies and firing techniques to achieve intended results.

Conceptually, I am interested in correspondence between the world of introspection and the outside physical world. I use various handbuilding techniques to create vessel-related, perforated hollow forms and inner spaces; formal systems that attempt to express psychological states as an architecture of the mind. Art compels me to create with my hands, and seek to visually express that which has no physical form. Most recently, this process has led me to a search for dialogue between Islamic and Christian patterning. This search has revealed dynamic layering of pattern and intertwined form, challenging my personal perspective and faith understanding.
